Oba of Lagos Threaten Igbos Over Upcoming Gubernatorial Elections.
Nigeria: Is this for real? This video shows Oba Rilwan Akiolu of Lagos threatening Igbos with death if they refuse to vote for his preferred candidate, Akin Ambode of The All Progressive Congress (APC).
The Oba's comments which has caused a widespread of public outrage in Nigeria, has also drawn a worldwide attention to the upcoming April 11 governorship election in the country.
“On Saturday, if anyone of you, I swear in the name of God, goes against my wish that Ambode will be the next governor of Lagos State, the person is going to die inside this water,''
Oba Akiolu said to the Igbos who reside in Lagos.
The Igbo ethnic group, which predominates much of southeast Nigeria, was seen as largely responsible for the -opponent party's- PDP’s victory in these areas during the presidential election of March 28 and 29.
This is so pathetic. Doesn't he understand that there is what we call "freedom of choice?" I thought traditional rulers are suppose to be apolitical? This is very shameful, coming from someone of high authority. He is probably a sentitive person and that affected the way he passed his message accross. Now that the video has gone viral, he might have a second thought about his actions. No one should be forced or bullied to vote for anyone.
Is this the 'change' we have been talking about? If incumbent Goodluck Jonathan could concede defeat gracefully, why would a traditional ruler be so aggressive and dictatorial in his speech?
Anyway, I trust Nigerians. They will take the Oba's threats in good faith. We have seen worse scenarios. We don't have much time to waste over what has been said out of fear and anger. Let's forgive one another and do what is right. Nigeria needs better leaders. Vote for whoever you believe will help Nigeria grow!
