See: Nigerian Artisan Ojo Obaniyi's Raffia Palm Cane Creation
Nigerian artisan Ojo Obaniyi never had a formal education, but his handiwork has attracted the attention of several people from different parts of the world.
To advertise his expertise in raffia palm cane weaving, the Ibadan native decided to break a world record. He covered his entire Volkwagen car with raffia palm cane and he drives it everyday. Genius!!!
According to Obaniyi, he deliberately designed his car that way in order to catch the attention of passersby. On his plate number, he has his name boldly written in red OBANIYI with his phone number attached.
This is his own way of advertising his business. ‘I wanted to prove a point that it is not only the educated elite that can make positive changes in society. we, the artisans also have talents toeffect a change and make a positive impact in the society. that is why I decided that I too must do something that will make people to recognize me and know me across the whole world and by extension prove to the world that african and indeed the entire black race have very talented people.’ he said in an interview in 2013.
His unusual creativity is one that gets people flabbergasted including my humble self. I wouldn't mind him decorating my entire house with raffia palm cane too. Just don't bring a match stick near my house. Lol!
Here are some amazing photos of Ojo Obaniyi's fine craftsmanship:
